TEAS Tuesday: What to expect with the updated version of the ATI TEAS exam

3 Min Read

ICYMI: there is a new ATI TEAS exam coming soon to a testing center near you!

On June 3, 2022, the current version of the ATI TEAS exam (Version 6) will be replaced with the updated ATI TEAS, Version 7. We’ve rounded up some of the most important information you need to know about the new exam below.

Why is the ATI TEAS exam changing?

Nursing and allied health programs rely on the TEAS to evaluate applicants’ academic preparedness for their studies, and it is ATI’s responsibility to make sure the exam accurately tests for that preparedness. That’s why every few years, the TEAS content outline is reviewed to ensure it is doing its job properly. During its 20-year existence, the TEAS has undergone 6 major revisions.

To create Version 7, ATI conducted research with subject matter experts in nursing education, math, science, reading, and English and language usage to ensure the test blueprint (a.k.a. the questions on the exam) reflects evolving Common Core State Standards, as well as nursing and allied health program criteria. These experts were recruited nationally and represent all program types.

What’s the difference between the current exam blueprint and the ATI TEAS, Version 7 exam blueprint?

The total number of questions and total time limit for the ATI TEAS, Version 7 exam will not change. There will still be 170 total questions on the updated exam – 150 scored items and 20 unscored pretest items – and test takers will still have 209 minutes to complete them.

The number of questions in each category of the TEAS (reading, math, science, and English and language usage) will change slightly with the updated Version 7. This table shows how the number of scored questions in each category will change from Version 6 to the ATI TEAS, Version 7:

The ATI TEAS, Version 7 will also introduce alternate item type questions. Alternate items are questions that are not the conventional, single-answer multiple choice questions. Currently, there are four different alternate item types on the ATI TEAS, Version 7 exam: multiple select, supply answer, hot spot, and ordered response.

When with the ATI TEAS, Version 7 exam be released?

The ATI TEAS, Version 7 Exam will be released on June 3, 2022.  This means if you take the TEAS prior to June 3, 2022, you will test on the ATI TEAS (Version 6).  If you take the TEAS on or after June 3, 2022, you will test on the Version 7 exam.

Is the ATI TEAS, Version 7 exam harder than the ATI TEAS, Version 6 exam?

The ATI TEAS, Version 7 is not designed to be any more difficult than the previous version of the TEAS exam. These tests are equated, which means they are comparable to each other and have the same degree of difficulty. The ATI TEAS, Version 7 will be different due to the question types and distribution of questions, but not due to a higher level of difficulty.
